Welingkarites to Strengthen Community Feeling and Spread Civic Awareness among Mumbaikars

Welingkar students have taken upon themselves the responsibility of strengthening the community feeling and raising civic awareness  in the city. Around 40 of Welingkarites have come together to play a vital role in the ‘Mumbai Bhushan’, the Best Housing Society competition. The contest has invited entries from the housing societies across  the six constituencies of Mumbai which  will be vying for the title of the  best housing society in their respective zones. Welingkar will work with the Yuvak Biradari and Maharashtra Chamber of Housing Industry (MCHI) in the venture.

Welingkar students will be visiting these societies along with the eminent jury members as they validify various parameters for identifying the ‘Mumbai Bhushan’ societies in different zones. The competition was rolled out on 26th December and would go on for over a month. The outstanding societies will be rewarded with ‘Mumbai Bhushan’ title and cash prize each.

Welingkar Institute had recently hosted a workshop to formally announce the contest  that detailed the various facets of the competition.  Present on the occasion were dignitaries like senior journalist Shri Kumar Ketkar, , Padmashri Kranti Shah, Managing Trustee- Yuvak Biradari (Bharat) and the project Chairman,  Shri Mohan Deshmukh,   former President -MCHI and Shri Govind Swarup, former  Secretary – Housing and Special Assistance Department  Govt of Maharashtra. The students  along with the jury members would be looking at parameters such as hygiene, security, disaster preparedness, administration and management, congeniality, welfare , water, energy,  social awareness and similar other factors, while conducting the  social auditing of the participating societies.

Dr Uday Salunkhe, Group Director, Welingkar Institute of Management Development and Research   said, “Participation in this CSR activity for the Mumbai city will sensitize the students of their social responsibility and give them a firsthand feel of societal issues like security, citizens’ welfare, environmental concerns, etc and will contribute in making a positive contribution to society.  This would strengthen the social fabric along with promoting   camaraderie among people which seems to be a disappearing intangible in modern times. WeSchool believes that for Management education to be holistic, it should groom leaders who have a global perspective, yet are thoroughly aware of local needs and sensitivities. Such an approach is vital for peace and prosperity of the society and also fosters  a strong community feeling. WeSchool’s involvement in MUNIJAN (Mumbai University New Initiative for Joint Action Now) for sustainable development, SIFE- project for Empowering the third gender  and PRAYAAS 2011;an initiative to train women entrepreneurs who hitherto lived in the family shadow and Mumbai Bhushan are   manifestations of our social responsibility by involving the youth “
